Problem

Unhealthy lifestyles and aging demographics are causing alarming rates of diabetes and heart diseases. Both diseases impair the blood flow and the electrical signals which initiate and orchestrate wound healing processes, creating chronic wounds as a consequence. Chronic wounds are devastating to patients quality of life physically, emotionally, socially – not to mention a constant risk of infections – which increase the risk of complications, amputations and fatalities.

Challenge

Chronic wounds are care intensive and pose an overwhelming challenge for caregivers and health care systems worldwide i.e. 2-4% of total health care costs. However, chronic wounds is an under-investigated field of medical research and despite the growing need, standard care predominately continue to consist of bandages and dressings. More effective, cost-efficient, easy to use and scalable treatments are urgently needed.

Solution

Hiperpatch is a next-generation wound care device which aims at improving patients’ quality of life, relieving care givers and reducing total cost of care. Hiperpatch catalyses healing by combining microcurrent stimulation, bio-feedback and science backed algorithms to reinforce suppressed signalling systems and physiological processes to improve wound healing. Naturally, Hiperpatch is also relevant for surgical wounds and cosmetic surgery.

Functionality

In the Inflammation phase electrical stimulation at the systemic level induces a faster inflammatory response and an increased vascular vasodilatation increasing tissue oxygenation, blood flow, and temperature. In the proliferation phase, electric stimulation generates increased angiogenesis (formation of new blood cells), collagen matrix formation, wound contraction, and re-epithelialization. In the remodeling phase electrical stimulation, at the systemic level, produces an advanced remodeling.

Science

When the skin is wounded, the charged ions inside and outside the layer flow down through their gradients. The ionic and voltage gradients dissipate around the wound edge until the wound is healed. All 5 cell types involved in wound healing respond to an electrical gradient with faster and more directed cell migration.
